Oliver Ellwood was born in Wilbraham in 1884 (Chesterton Q2-1884 3B:505) baptised in Great Wilbraham on 9th May 1894, the son of James and Jane ELLWOOD
(née RICH).
1891 census...Aged 6, he was near the Pond, Wicken with his father James Ellwood [39] police constable born Boxworth; his mother Jane [38] born Boxworth; brothers William [13] grocer's assistant, James [12] and Robert [9] all born in Ickleton and sister Mary A. [8] born in Wilbraham. 1901 census...Aged 17, a grocer's assistant, he was at Carter Street, Fordham with his parents and brother James (farm labourer). 1911 census...He had not been found in this census. It seems unlikely he was in the Army as he would have been mobilised at the outbreak of war, which his medal card seems to indicate did not happen His parents were still at Carter Street, Fordham, with his brother James. In Q1-1914 in King's Lynn, he married Florence MITCHELSON [24-2-1891]. They had 2 daughters, Iris Gilden [13-8-15] and Vera May [7-3-1916]. |

He enlisted in King's Lynn. The medal rolls have him in the 5th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. No award of a silver war bade has been found so there is no clue at present as to how he came to die in UK and be buried in Dersingham. Dersingham it would seem would have been his home after his marriage.
